Rotary grinder SAPHIR GrindStar® 300 – Careful handling of soil water, the prevention of wind and water erosion and increasing restrictions on the use of chemical-synthetic plant protection products present arable and crop farming with new challenges. At the same time, resistance to herbicidal, fungicidal and insecticidal active ingredients is increasing, and problem grass weeds such as black-grass, silky bent-grass and ryegrass are found more frequently. To meet these challenges and problems, we have developed the GrindStar rotary grinder – the machine for ultra-shallow post-harvest management.

Features and benefits

• Seven tools each are fitted to the passively driven rotors. Thanks to the inclination transverse and longitudinal to the direction of travel, three tools are always working in the soil. The direction of rotation of the front rotors is opposite to that of the rear rotors. This arrangement and the mirror-symmetrical design of the rotors result in a full-surface work result.
• Thanks to the sophisticated pressure compensation system in the rotor, the tools are guided along the ground contour and can thus compensate for unevenness transverse to the direction of travel.
• The parallelogram-guided suspension of the rotors on the frame ensures uniform ultra-shallow cultivation. In combination with the pressure compensation system in the rotors, optimum horizontal and vertical guidance of the working tools is achieved. Only this makes the considerably improved ground adaptation possible compared to conventional concepts.
• The rotors are driven solely by the forward speed. The low draught requirement and the high forward speed of 12 to 18 km/h result in high area outputs and low operating costs.
• Volunteer rape in a frost-killed catch crop
• Independent trials conducted by TH Köln from 2021 to 2023 and a field trial by the LLH from 2024 demonstrate the advantage of ultra-shallow stubble cultivation, max. 2 cm deep, in post-harvest management after winter oilseed rape. Volunteer rape is thus not buried but stimulated to germinate.
• Compared to the untreated control and also to plots worked shallow (0 to 1 cm) and medium-deep (2 to 4 cm) with a compact disc harrow, significantly more volunteer rape was stimulated to germinate in the GrindStar plots.

• The GrindStar also proved convincing in controlling emerged volunteer oilseed rape, with a control success of over 95 %.
• Similar to volunteer rape, the germination rate of black-grass decreases with increasing seed depth in the soil. Buried black-grass seeds become dormant and do not germinate immediately after harvest, but in one of the following main crops.
