Based on the emergency service experience of various veterinary clinics, we recommend the use of the "HK" obstetric aid only in the event of deviations in the natural birth process. The aim is a healthy, productive cow and a healthy, viable calf. It can take 1 - 3 hours from the rupture of the amniotic sac to the emergence of the calf's head in cows and up to 4 - 6 hours in heifers without the need for obstetric assistance. For the examination, the animal should be restrained beforehand and the tail tied, the labia-perineal area cleaned, the hands and arm cleaned and provided with sterile lubricant. Then the amniotic sac, cervix and calf must be felt and any injuries or constrictions recognised. Pulling assistance with the "HK" obstetric aid should then be provided on the lying animal at the same time as the contractions. If the calf is too large, the uterus is twisted or there are other complications, we recommend calling the vet. Patience is still the best obstetrician!
